Welcome to the activity pack that has been inspired by our short film Underview Effect. It is designed to be used alongside the video of the film.

Underview Effect is a short animated film created with a group of young artists, exploring the theme of climate change.

Things that you may need

  • Arts and Crafts Supplies

  • Any items of rubbish that you have (as long as it’s clean and not sharp - check the recycling box)

  • Pens and Paper

Start by watching the video of Underview Effect here:

Activity 1

Underview Effect looks at the effects of Climate Change on the world around us. It was made using a mixture of papercraft, puppetry and computer animation. As you can see, many of the things were created by reusing materials you can find lying around the house or classroom (a world made of paper, skyscrapers made of paper clips and a spinning earth).

Now it’s time for you to get creative! Get together any recycling materials and arts and crafts supplies you have around you. You might need an adult's help to make sure they are clean and safe to use.

Using these materials, design and create a futuristic space monster that could be included in Underview Effect. We’d love to see what you create, so please share your creatures with us on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #Underview Effect.

Activity 2

Climate change is a big problem that will need all of us to help fix. This requires us to do lots of different things, to try and improve the world for future generations. Take some time and write a list of as many things that you can do to help to protect the environment and stop climate change. This could be anything from recycling your rubbish to donating your old toys to charity instead of throwing them away.

Once you have written this list -  share your ideas with your family and friends and help the world with some positive change.

Activity 3

Across the world, many young people are playing a role in leading the change in our behaviour that is needed to protect our environment.

Go online and research a young climate change activist and try to answer the following questions.

  • Who are they and where are they from?

  • What have they been doing to help solve climate change?

  • Do they do it alone or with others?

  • Is there anything you could do to help them?

Once you have done this, look into how you can let people know about the reality of climate change and share with us what you are doing to make a difference.

Underview Effect was made during a week-long workshop with young people in Corby as part of Grow Festival. MBD artists ran a week of creative workshops along with artist and puppeteer Tom Cleaver, (www.mrcleaversmonsters.com), with a group of 10 young people.

The workshop was inspired by MBD’s projection artwork Overview Effect.

Underview Effect was funded by Arts Council England and supported by Grow Festival and The Core at Corby Cube.
