INFINITE MUSEUM

THE PROJECT

What if you could step into history and explore the heritage of South & East Lincolnshire like never before? To walk through the past, hear the voices of those who lived it, and see familiar places come alive in new and unexpected ways? That’s exactly what the Infinite Museum sets out to do.

MBD has teamed up with the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership’s NPO Programme Story Tellers to launch this innovative co-created project that uses VR to bring historical artefacts and local stories to life, making them accessible to a wider audience in an engaging and immersive way.

At the heart of Infinite Museum is community participation. Young people and local artists actively shape the project through workshops, residencies, and collaborative making. By combining heritage, creativity, and technology, Infinite Museum not only preserves local stories but also supports creative skills development and digital upskilling across the region.

How Infinite Museum Works

Infinite Museum is a multi-user VR experience centred around a virtual museum that transports audiences into different moments, stories, and environments. Unlike traditional VR installations, which can feel isolating, its design for a group of 1-4 people invites participants to explore together, to interact, share moments, and spark conversations as they go.

You and your group step into a virtual lift that becomes your gateway to a series of themed floors - each one unlocking a different story from Lincolnshire’s past. These stories come to life through art, animation, poetry, and sound, offering a deeply sensory journey through place, memory, and imagination.

Designed as a growing, modular platform, new rooms are added over time to the Infinite Museum, allowing the project to grow every year and evolve with each community involved.

  • Focused on stories from Spalding, drawing on themes connected to the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society and Ayscoughfee Hall Museums and Gardens.

  • Four VR experiences accessed from the museum’s virtual foyer, including a youth co-designed Cabinet of Curiosities and a VR poem co-created with local artists.

  • Community participation through workshops and artist residencies.

YEAR 24/25

YEAR 25/26

  • Two brand new VR experiences inspired by Sutton-On-Sea’s heritage.

  • Expanded access through simplified VR headsets for schools, libraries, and festivals.

  • Ongoing youth engagement and skills development.

What makes Infinite Museum truly special is how deeply rooted it is in the local community. From concept to creation, this project was shaped by the voices, ideas, and imaginations of artists, young people, and residents across the region. It’s not just for the community - it’s by the community.
