Join our Board!

We’re looking for new members to join MBD’s Advisory Board, bringing new perspectives, experience and ideas to help us shape the next stage of the organisation.

What is MBD’s Advisory Board?

Our Advisory Board is a non-executive group that sits alongside the MBD team.

The Board provides advice, guidance, challenge and oversight, helping us consider both the opportunities and risks facing the organisation. Meetings cover MBD’s creative programme as well as financial, operational and organisational matters.

MBD is a non-profit company, but we are also a business, and the Board helps us take both our social purpose and the long-term sustainability of the organisation seriously.

Board members are not directors or trustees of MBD and do not take on the legal responsibilities associated with those roles.

MBD creates ambitious arts and cultural experiences using immersive and digital technology. We work across arts, heritage, learning and public engagement, developing projects with cultural organisations, communities, artists and partners across the UK.

Who are we looking for?

We’re interested in the particular knowledge, perspective and experience you could bring, including experience gained outside traditional board or leadership roles. Previous board experience is not necessary. We’re particularly interested in hearing from people with knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

Arts, culture and heritage

This might include experience of cultural organisations, museums and heritage, producing, commissioning, festivals, public engagement, learning, participation or cultural funding.

Digital, immersive and creative technology

This might include XR, games, interactive experiences, digital production, creative technology, innovation or an understanding of the wider technology landscape in which MBD operates.

Finance, organisational development and strategic growth

This might include financial planning, business development, organisational strategy, sustainable growth, income development or supporting organisations through periods of change.

What would I need to do?

We ask Board members to attend a meeting approximately once every three months.

We want Board members to:

  • contribute ideas, advice and constructive challenge

  • help us think strategically about MBD’s development

  • engage with financial and operational information

  • share relevant experience, knowledge and connections

  • act as a supportive but independent voice around the organisation

  • advocate for MBD and our work where appropriate

What matters most is that you are interested in what MBD is trying to achieve, can contribute thoughtfully to discussion and are comfortable offering both support and constructive challenge.

Is this a paid position?

No. Advisory Board membership is voluntary, but we will cover reasonable expenses associated with taking part.

We recognise that people’s circumstances are different and want participation in the Board to be as accessible as possible.

What would I get from it?

You’ll become part of a group helping to shape an independent organisation working across art, technology, heritage and public engagement.

It is an opportunity to contribute your experience to real organisational and creative decisions, meet people working across different sectors and gain insight into the development of immersive and digital cultural projects.

You’ll also get opportunities to experience MBD’s work first hand, including projects that use virtual reality, interactive technology and large-scale immersive media.

Most importantly, we want the relationship to be useful in both directions. We value the knowledge Board members bring, but also want being part of MBD to offer interesting conversations, new connections and opportunities to learn.

How do I apply?

Please tell us:

  • a little about yourself

  • why you are interested in joining MBD’s Advisory Board

  • what experience, knowledge or perspective you feel you could bring

You can send this in whatever format works best for you, including written, audio or video.

You are also welcome to include a CV or LinkedIn profile, but this is not essential.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an informal conversation with members of the MBD team and Advisory Board.
